The modernization of Lithuanian art during the 1930s caused a split between the different generations of artists. Although the Lithuanian Artists' Union established in 1935 aimed to unite all professional artists, this goal remained unrealized, since sections of "realists" and "individualists" established in 1939 mounted separate exhibitions and maintained opposing views.

The artists grouped into "realists" section under Lithuanian Artists' Union were not pronounced opponents of the freedom in art, but they believed, that art should not be detached from reality, it must be relevant to the life of the nation and its vital interests. Section was headed by A. Žmuidzinavičius. The first exhibition of "realists" was held in 1939, less than a week later after "individualists". In it took part 48 artists with 271 artworks. The older generation was represented with works by Antanas Žmuidzinavičius, Petras Kalpokas, Adomas Varnas, Jonas Šileika, Zigmas Petravičius, Jonas Mackevičius, Antanas Jaroševičius, Vladas Didžiokas and others. Younger generation participants included Juozas Bagdonas, Povilas Puzinas, Vytautas Bičiūnas, Jonas Vaitys, Adomas Smetona, etc. According to the exhibition catalog preface, it aimed to show different art trends from the artists of different ages, and was a worthwhile effort at bringing together the prominent forces of Lithuanian art and, at the same time, significant and widespread representation of the period of the rebirth of the nation. “At the exhibition we will not see the works which, in search of originality, are affected by insincerity.“ Preface is followed by the list of exhibition objects with marking about used technique, also included 16 full-page exhibition images printed on coated paper.
