Ludolfs Liberts (1895-1959) was painter, graphic artist, scenic designer, very important personality in Latvian culture. Due to his talent and limitless work capacity the artist saw great success in all of his endeavours leaving behind a substantial artistic heritage. Liberts was a member of Riga artists’ group, artists’ society “Sadarbs” and Independent Artist Unity, “Zala varna". He took part in exhibitions since 1914. His works were exhibited also abroad - in Paris, Brussels, Berlin, Stockholm. Works of early 1920s marked by expressive constructivism. Gorgeous colors, sharp, almost metallic, outlines defining the planes are typical for these tumultuous years. Later the line in his works lost its harshness and accentuation. The color scheme became richer and the style evolved to a more impressionistic character, the reason for this was artist’s trip to Paris. A new development began in 1930, when the artist traveled to the Adriatic Sea and to Venice. The silence and charms of Venice greatly inspired him. At sight of Venice so unique and personal became equally important to the northern artist. In Venice, Liberts confirmed his painterly style, which he carried on through different variations until the end. In his works, Liberts discovered the imagery of visionary reality, memories and fantasies.

According to Liberts, in current exhibition he deliberately avoided retrospective, and aimed at focusing on present, namely on last four years of work (about 1934-1938). And the fact that the exhibition took place in the artist's workshop had made this impression even more intense. Displayed artworks depict after-Venice period of creation. Paintings were made in light and bright colors and represented different subject matters: cityscapes of his favourite cities (Riga, Paris, Venice), which are considered his highest achievements, also Latvian landscapes, figurative compositions, portraits, still-lifes.
