Near Fine condition; cover is minorly soiled, slightly wrapped cover edges, small creases across cover corners. 

 

The catalogue of the memorial exhibition held at the State Russian Museum in Leningrad, in May 1927 to mark the 10 year anniversary of famous Russian engraver Matė Vasily Vasilyevich (1856-1917) death. It includes biographical essay by Vsevolod Voinov, a well-known Russian painter, art historian drawing and head of the drawing and printmaking department in Russian Museum, three previously unpublished Matė’s prints printed from original Blocks and relating to the early creation period, list of the 86 exhibits grouped firstly by printmaking technique, secondary by period of producing, separately listed Mate’s portraits of famous people. Vignette on the front cover designed by V. Voinov, Russian Museum symbol on the back cover – by N. Brimmer. 

 

Maté was a master of portrait, out of his 278 engravings 225 pieces are portraits. He also worked as a teacher, among his students were A.P. Ostroumova-Lebedeva , P.A. Shillingovsky and others. He trained I.I. Levitan, I.Y. Repin, V.A. Serov, B.M. Kustodiev in engraving technique. In 1899 he became an academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts.
