This temporary exhibition of 1937 featured 185 exhibits from the collection of the State Hermitage. On display were portraits of Antiquity from the 5th century BC to the 4th century AD. In contrast to the Greeks who saw a person as a manifestation of a type (athlete, philosopher, general), the Romans emphasised his belonging to a particular clan and in the portraits they presented public rank and personal capabilities. In addition to a portrait sculpture, the exposition also included coins, cameos and intaglios with portrait depictions.

In the advanced introductory article of the catalogue is traced the historical evolution of portraiture from a realistic Roman and idealized Greece depiction to a psychological and individualistic portrait during the period under review. List of exhibits provides title and a brief description (if known) of the exhibit (estimated period of creation, material, measures, historical data). Included 7 full-page illustrations reproducing artworks from the exhibition.
