Creative association of painters and graphic artists Zhar-Tsvet incorporated in Moscow in 1923-1929. It was founded by the group of former participants of the societies Mir Iskusstva (the World of Art), Moskovskiy Salon (the Moscow Salon), Sojuz Russkikh Khudozhnikov (the Union of Russian Artists), Novoe Obshestvo Khudozhnikov (the New Society of Artists). In their work, the members of the association relied on the traditions of the World of Art, aspiring to what they called “compositional realism on the basis of the artistic mastery“. In the introductory to the 4rd exhibition catalog (current one), art historian Aleksei Sidorov writes: “The artists of the Zhar-Tsvet are clearly united by the pursuit of painting composition, since the latter is opposed to the “etude”, a triumphant in the modern painting.” Zhar-Tsvet acted mainly as an exhibition association, in the five years of its existance were held 5 large-scale exhibitions in Moscow.

Current, the 4th Zhar-Tsvet exhibition held at the halls of the Anatomical Theater of Moscow State University in 1928 included 339 paintings and graphics by 52 participanting artists: Vasily Vatagin, Matvei Dobrov, Mikhail Kharlamov, Yevgeny Kamzolkin, Olga Della-Vos-Kardovskaya, Sergei Lobanov, Julia Razumovskaya, Natalia Agapeva and many others.
