In 1906 Russian orientalist Dmitry Pozdneev published in Tokyo a Japanese language textbook for the Russian-speaking reader in two books “Historical Chrestomathy of Japan”. It consists of an introduction, a Japanese text written in Latin, a Russian translation, a vocabulary, chronological tables of the history of Japan (tables with a list of emperor names, periods of their reign and brief description of each period (separate pagination 5 pp.)). This is a kind of Japanese language course, based on the recording of Japanese written language using the Latin alphabet. Text of the Chrestomathy includes two sections, the first section contains 20 texts (from a brief retelling of the myth about Sun Goddess Amaterasu to the fall of the Hojo), the second - 17 texts (from the restoration of Kammu 1333–1336 to the first Sino-Japanese War 1894–1895). Current edition includes 20 texts of the first section.
