Between 1933 and 1935 the exhibitions of ancient and contemporary Chinese art took place throughout Europe. On the initiative  of artist-educator-curator Xu Beihong (1895-1953) in 1934 the exhibition arrived to the USSR, firstly to the Moscow's Historical Museum on May 7, and after to the State Hermitage Museum in Leningrad, where it was opened on June 18. This had become the first exposition for the Russian public fully focused on the Chinese painting. It included 339 objects by more than 100 artists beginning from the ancient Tang epoch 619-907 until the contemporary Chinese art of 1933-1934. The exposition was also supplemented with some items from the Hermitage own collection (paintings, ceramics, porcelain, carpets).

The exhibition catalog’s Leningrad edition includes article by the leading Soviet sinologist academician Vasily Alekseev “On the exhibition of Chinese paintings in the Hermitage”, his translation of one of the most famous men of art Wang Wei’s treatise “Secrets of painting" (VIII century), also Xu Beihong’s exhibition review “Chinese painting”. Articles are followed by list of works grouped by epoch (names of the artists are printed on Russian and Chinese, indicated place and time of birth, if known), at the end are attached 15 illustrations reproducing artworks from the exhibition.
