This novel by Vera Naval' is based on an autobiographical story. She was in her first marriage the wife of Arseny Morozov, a younger brother of Ivan Morozov (famous Russian collector of avant-garde French art). After her husband's death the famous Arseny Morozov's Manor located at 16 Vozdvizhenka Street in Moscow passed on to Arseny's lover Nina Alexandrovna Konshina under a fraudulent will, in which she, as Morozov's legal wife and their only daughter were disinherited. The novel is focused on the developing of this story.


Vera Naval’ (1883-1944) – Russian writer. Emigrated to Vienna. Started writing in the childhood, but was never dependent on literary earnings before. Eleven years after the Russian Revolution, she had been faced with a difficult financial situation and completely dependent on the income from this book and all the subsequent works. 

Russian emigre literature in Harbin. Very rare.
