The first exhibition of Scottish art in Finland was staged at the Ateneum Art Museum in Helsinki and then in Turku at the recently opened Art Museum in 1905 and included 122 works by 62 participants. Among them Patrick William Adam, Oswald Birley, Thomas Austen Brown, James Cadenhead, David Young Cameron, Robert McGowan Coventry, Thomas Millie Dow, Joseph Farquharson, Robert Gibb, Sir James Guthrie, James Whitelaw Hamilton, John Henry Lorimer, William McTaggart, James Campbell Noble, James Paterson, Sir George Pirie, etc.

The exhibition examines the most important work made by Scottish artists of the time. Both Scotland and Finland of that period had produced artists strongly committed to the tradition and ideology of Art Nouveau and so the exhibitions should be viewed in light of this common group. But there were also some exceptions resonating with national ideals among presented artworks, for instance, the romanticised peasantry in Hugh Cameron s painting, and folk content of the Joseph Thorburn Ross s work. One painting from this show was later acquired into the Finnish Art Society s colletion: a watercolour by the Charles Hodge Mackie (1862 1920). The committee of that year describe Mackie as a technically skilled exponent of typically high-quality English watercolour, and reveal a desire to acquire examples of international art fitted to each country s perceived forte.

Exhibition catalog in addition to the list of works contains artists' biographical summaries.
