Artists' society Sadarbs (eng. Cooperation) was founded in 1924 by the Professors and teachers from the Latvian Academy of Arts. Among the first members were artists Ludolfs Liberts, Jūlijs Madernieks, the young art historian Jānis Siliņš, sculptors Teodors Zalkans and Kārlis Zāle, and Valdemars Tone, its president. Society doors were open to the artists and art historians with high academic education, also for the most talented students. Seeking to balance modernism and academism, they also wished to bring Latvian art closer to the art of Western Europe, hovewer without displaying any interest in contemporary movements. While new members Konrāds Ubāns, Burkards Dzenis, Rūdolfs Pelše, Kārlis Miesnieks, Eduards Brencēns, Jānis Kuga, Augusts Annuss, Eduards Kalniņš, Arijs Skride, Vilis Vasariņš and others joined the association others left it, including Tone and Zalkans in 1925, one year after the creation of Sadarbs, and the position of President was taken by Liberts. During Sadarbs existence untill 1940 were organized eleven exhibitions in Riga and one in Brussel (1930), each featuring one or more foreign artists.

Current the second Society’s exhibition held at the Riga City Art Museum in 1926 showcased 149 works of art (paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics, etc.) pointing towards modernism by ten artists: Kārlis Brencēns, Burkardas Dzenis, Jānis Kuga, Ludolfs Liberts, Jūlijs Madernieks, Kārlis Miesnieks, Rūdolfs Pelše, Kārlis Zāle, Jūlijs Straume, Konstantīns Rončevskis.
