The Lithuanian Artists' Union established in 1935 aimed to unite all professional artists, but this goal remained unrealized, because in March 1939 Union members devided into "realists" and "individualists" sections. Many young artists who sought to develop modernism and their artistic individualities fostered contacts with Western European art and artists formed “individualists” section. Their confrontation had become especially noticeable in the run-up to the 5th Autumn art exhibition, when the exhibitions of the both sections were organized separately, but almost simultaneously.

“Individuslists” exhibition was held at the Vytautas the Great Museum of Culture in Kaunas from 19 November to 5 December 1939. The section were represented by 26 participated artists: section’s chairman Petras Aleksandravičius, Mečislovas Bulaka, Alfonsas Dargis, Vladas Eidukevičius, Antanas Gudaitis, Viktoras Petravičius, Viktoras Vizgirda, Rimtas Kalpokas, Zalė Bekeris, Stepas Žukas, etc.

Both "individualists" and "realists" exhibitions were accompanied by separate catalogues. Current catalog of "individualists" includes foreword by journalist Juozas Keliuotis, list of 113 artworks indicating piece dimensions, used technique, year of creation, also included 16 full-page artworks reproductions printed on coated stuff.
