Current richly illustrated edition gives an Estonian art review from the beginning of the 19th century until 1930s of 20th century. 19th century overview includes chapters about realistic art tendencies, romanticism in Estonian painting, academic trends and sculpture in Estonia. Among most important artists of the era named Karl Gottlieb Wenig, Karl Timoleon von Neff, Johan Köler, Karl Ludwig Maibach, Adolf Hoffmann etc. Chapters concerning 20th century describe Estonian art movements related to the beginning of the century, Estonian art during the time of independence, developments in the fields of painting, engraving, sculpture and applied arts. Mentioned prominent representatives of this period, which are Estonian morernist artists: Ado Vabbe, Märt Laarman, Arnold Akberg, Jaan Vahtra, Felix Johansen, Eduard Ole, Johannes Greenberg, Aleksander Bergman, Eduard Wiiralt, and many others. Included biographical notes of about 100 artists mentioned in the publication and list of 98 artwork reproductions. The edition is intended for foreign readers who is interest in Estonian art and gives basic knowledges of the theme.


Publication author Rudolf Johannes Paris (1896-1973) was an Estonian art historian, critic and artist. He studied at Pallas Art School, also in Germany, in Finland. Paris researched Baltic German and Estonian art history of 19-20th century, published monographs of Estonian artists and reviews about Estonian art development, created art terminological lexicon. He was also profilic artist of paintings, caricatures and book illustrations.
